The Surfing Foodie

Tarnea O'Meara feels the best she has felt in her entire life. Her passion for surfing, food and travel has given her a reason to strive that little bit more throughout the day. Tarnea is currently chasing her dream of being a professional surfer whilst studying nutrition online and trotting across the globe experiencing new cultures. Tarnea hopes to inspire all ages to eat a little better, live a little more and aim a little higher. Nothing is ever out of reach.

You're living the life, travelling the world, surfing and eating great food! Of course these things don’t just land in your lap, tell us a little bit about your journey so far, and what your longer term goals are.

tarnea omeara surfing foodieMy journey so far has been incredible. I jumped straight into competitive surfing with joining 100 or so other girls on the Women's Qualifying Series (WQS) and its tough! I train 5 times a week in the gym now (I have amped this up in the past month due to not getting many results). I train with my surfing coach and I eat the best I can so I can get the most out of my body. I started surfing when I was 16 and I was determined to be better than my brother! This then turned into wanting more and the lifestyle of a surfer, you get to surf and travel!

I am lucky to have the parents I have, they support me a lot in every way. I worked a bucket load last year to save for this year's WQS but this also interfered with training and energy for surfing. My goals now in the longer term is to save for next year, and work on my own personal image as an athlete. Competitions are over for me for the year, so I plan to make a small profile film and concentrate on media.

You obviously love good, clean, nutritious food. Where did this passion come from?

My parents! Mum being a nutritionist and dad being a chiropractor, I have been surrounded by it since I was born. I wasn't always into it, I had my rebel stages of swapping lunch box's with others at school, I never got a roll up! But since growing up, I really understood how good it can make you feel! Its amazing how a simple meal can affect your mind, body and mood.

What are some healthy eating tips that you can share for our readers that find it difficult to stick to a healthy diet whilst travelling?

breakfast bowlFind a local market! They are always around, I was in El Salvador and I managed to find one.

Eat local and ask the chefs where they would eat, they know the best places.

I would also recommend not eating plane food! I never feel good after it so take and make your own, you will thank yourself later when your battling jet lag. You take food on the plane but just not into the country.

Take probiotics, greens and just little power foods just in case (natural ones).

Research before you get there, even at home I look up the menus! There are a lot of travel blogs that have small bits of information to help you.

What are your 3 favourite food items that you cannot live without?

Right now, Im a bit addicted to tahini, avocado and papaya with lime.

There’s more to competitive surfing than just going down to the beach and slipping into the water. What other training do you do to keep in top physical shape?

I train 5 times a week, surf everyday (this can range from 1 to 3 times a day). I train with a surfing coach every 2nd or so week. I am also currently training with a breath enhancement coach to help with breath holds, mental training and awareness. Eating is all apart of the training I believe, so what you put in your mouth can determine how energetic you feel each day. I eat foods high in fat, veggies, fruit, nuts and seed. Meat and protein is important to me.

Best piece of advice you’ve been given? Or motto or mantra that you live by?

Oh there are way to many! I have been given incredible advice over the last year, but I would say that the start of this quote is one of my favourites:

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure."
