Good Food: Simple, Clean and Natural

08‐04‐16

There's an incredible buzz around good, simple, clean and natural food right now! Checkout the latest trends from superfoods to paleo from the recent Natural and Organic Supershow here.

Having recently exhibited the range of At One superfood and paleo bars at the Natural and Organic Supershow in Melbourne, it was exciting to feel the buzz surrounding natural, clean, simple and nutritious foods and lifestyles. Its sometimes deflating to see the marketing power of the big industrial food brands, but we can take heart in the increasing interest and knowledge across the general public in nutrition and a healthy lifestyle!

Simplicity

One key theme that we live by and that is being embraced by more and more people, is one of simplicity. It’s a growing theme not only in terms of lifestyles (think of the tiny house movement, or the increasing popularity of meditation and mindfulness) but particularly in terms of the food that we eat. More and more, people are wanting to do it themselves. The increased popularity of bulk wholefood stores is testament to this. Buy your bulk ingredients then go home and make your own muesli, snacks, almond milk, kombucha and even chocolate!

sambazon acai bowlThis is consistent with the At One philosophy, where its entirely possible to visit a bulk wholefood store, buy the ingredients in this one store, then go home and make any of our snack bars. Its that simple and that’s the way we like it! We love making our own muesli at home as well, but in recent times we’ve found that we’re too busy to do that. Luckily enough there’s some fantastic mueslis from companies like Paleo Pure and we found a wonderful breakfast topper range from Koja Health. These products are all made from pure, natural ingredients only with no added nasties, so they’re just as good as making it yourself!

Sport and Fitness Nutrition

Another thing we found was lots of interest in simple and natural products from people looking for sports nutrition. We found that people are sick of being bamboozled by the super-complex science based nature of many sports products. Again, this resonates with us as this is exactly where At One started as a business.

Whilst running the 250km Marathon des Sables across the Sahara Desert in 2012, our co-founder Andrew came to the realization that many sports nutrition products are full of highly processed / manufactured / unnatural junk. He was perplexed as to why athletes that spend so much of their time, energy and focus on training their body for peak performance, would consume a fuel that’s largely unnatural and incompatible with their performance goals. But the tide is finally turning and its so encouraging to find that more and more people are recognising that a simple, natural product is best.

Beware of the Gimmick!

On the other hand, I did notice that unfortunately there's still a lot of gimmicky products. Designed to play on people's base vulnerabilities around health, weight and wellness, these products are usually overly complicated, make big promises and can be super expensive. One thing I would be wary of is the growing number of concentrated powders, products and potions that promise something amazing like 50-100x nutrition of everyday food. That sounds great, but we've got to remember that our bodies might not be able to process such large quantities of these nutrients. As with everything, moderation is important. After all, you can die from drinking too much water.

Paleo

Andrew with Pete EvansAnd of course, Pete Evans was one of the big names to be at the show along with his partner at The Paleo Way, Luke Hines. Now whether you think Paleo is a gimmick or not, there’s no denying that the Paleo message about eating simple, unprocessed foods based on our historical diets makes complete and undeniable sense. We got to watch a little of Pete’s presentations where he demonstrated some simple techniques for preserving food, its great to see some of these simple skills of our grandparents coming back into fashion!

Good, simple, clean, natural food. There’s no better way. We’re already looking forward to next year’s Natural and Organic Supershow to meet more people that have come to this realisation!
