Stacey Foat nutritionistAnd yet it’s funny how often, in fact daily, we are putting things through the digestive tract which aren’t even food! It’s no wonder digestive complaints are common and now linked with more serious health conditions such as compromised immunity, depression, auto-immune conditions, inflammatory bowel disease and the list goes on.

So what exactly is food? In the truest sense, I mean. We all know you can head to the supermarket and purchase a whole heap of ‘food-like’ substances. But when you break it down, something that is persevered in a can, with more numbers then actual real food products listed in the ingredients, is it really food that we are consuming? Then we have all the fad dieting ‘protein shakes’ and low carb bars, loaded with artificial sweeteners, colours and ingredients. Many consider these a staple diet, thanks to clever marketing with beautiful buff bodies and toned slim tummies.

But in all seriousness, when you open your fridge or pantry, how many of your everyday ‘foods’ are actually in their original whole form and not adulterated or modified in order to improve the consumer experience? Food has become so much more about how it tastes, sidelining the importance of nutritional content and pure wholesome non-genetically modified food. And although science is lacking, or rather, somewhat ignored in this regard, I believe there is a direct correlation between our current food sources, choices and quality, which has led to the rapid increase in disease amongst society.

So where do you start, when getting back to the basics of improving your daily nutrition? It’s difficult when we’re constantly fed misinformation regarding health and nutrition and we’re bombarded with media advertising making false statements about health and wellbeing. Well, we start exactly there, with the basics. Keep it simple stupid, so they say, which certainly isn’t quite so simple when the fundamental concepts of nutrition are built on a pyramid that couldn’t be further from the healthy truth if it tried. So here’s my top 5 tips for revamping, restocking and re-educating yourself on common food and dietary principles, so that you and your family can really benefit from REAL nutrition and lead a happy, healthy, vibrant, disease free life! 

1. Forget everything they taught you about the Healthy Eating Pyramid.
It’s a bold statement, I know. But the base of this pyramid, recommending anywhere from 8-11 serves of grains and complex carbohydrates a day, is your biggest mistake yet with a diet high in refined, processed grains, including breads, breakfast cereals, pastas, white rice, pastries, bake goods and so on. This is your fastest ticket to weight gain, insulin resistance, diabetes, metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disease.

2. If it requires preservatives, then it ain’t real food!
organic green vegetablesWe’ve all heard the saying ‘fresh is best’, and this rings true for many reasons. One, because the older your food, the more chance the vitamin and mineral content is diminished. But most importantly, these additives, preservatives and flavour enhancers come with a consequence. Chemical based additives have no place in the human diet. They are yet another toxin the liver and body has to eliminate, which is taxing on the body and in the process can create severe health problems, especially if you don’t eliminate these effectively. And we all know how common constipation, or rather, a lack of 2 formed bowel motions a day is! Anything from skin rashes, headaches, breathing difficulties and hormone disruption are just some of the common long-term side effects of consuming a diet high in chemical additives.

Do your own research; get familiar with ‘numbers’ in your ingredients lists. Some are worse than others, but by downloading an app on food additives on your smart phone or purchasing the popular book The Chemical Maze, by Bill Statham, you can be pro-active in making conscious, healthy choices for yourself and family.

3. Super charge your nutrition with Super foods
‘Super food’ is a household term these days, but is it something you consider when making food choices? There’s varying definitions and degrees of just how super a food is, but the bottom line is, a superfood is one that is high in naturally occurring vitamins, minerals, antioxidant and phyto-nutrients - all created by mother nature! So think, plant based, bright in colour, fresh and wholesome and you generally can’t go wrong.

4. Have a healthy wholefood snack or treat up your sleeve!
There’s not many of us who aren’t excited by sweet treats, sugars and salty, carby foods. They trigger neurotransmitter reactions in our brains, which keep us wanting more, which is why they are so addictive! You’re health and wellbeing isn’t necessarily on the top of their priority list, they are in it for the business, which means selling attractive food, that appeals to our emotional wellbeing. Not all claims are true, but if you can stick to the rules, fresh is best, real food ingredients, free of chemical preservatives, and food in its most original state, then you know you’re on the right track! For example, how does milk arrive? Straight from the cow. A protein shake powder, has certainly been processed, tampered with and undergone a lot of stages before it has reached its final destination, how much nutrition do you really think is left in the remaining product?
